Electrical Motor Testing
Motors don't fail without warning. Insulation degrades, windings deteriorate, and rotor bars crack—all detectable months before catastrophic failure. Using PdMA's 6 Fault Zone methodology, we test every failure pathway so you can plan repairs instead of reacting to breakdowns.
How It Works
Test offline or online.
No motor removal required.
Deep insulation analysis with the motor stopped, or full diagnostics while it runs—we match the approach to your production schedule.
250 – 5,000V
Test voltage range
Offline Testing
Motor de-energized for deep insulation resistance, polarization index, and winding analysis. Catches degradation invisible to online methods.
- Insulation up to 3 teraohms
- Stator winding comparison
- No production impact during shutdown windows
Zero Downtime
Test while running
Online Testing
Motor stays energized and in production. Power quality, current signature, torque, and efficiency analyzed without interruption.
- No shutdown required
- Rotor & air gap analysis
- Real-time power quality assessment
The 6 Fault Zones
What We Test
PdMA's methodology examines every motor across six distinct fault zones—covering every failure pathway from supply to shaft.
Power Quality
Voltage imbalance, harmonic distortion, over/under voltage, and frequency deviations. Supply-side issues that stress windings and shorten motor life.
Power Circuit
Connection integrity, phase balance, and contact resistance from the MCC to the motor terminals. Detects loose connections, corroded contacts, and cable degradation.
Insulation
Resistance-to-Ground, Polarization Index, and Step Voltage testing from 250 to 5,000V. Identifies insulation degradation before it causes ground faults.
Stator
Winding resistance, inductance balance, and turn-to-turn insulation comparison. Identifies shorted turns, open coils, and developing winding faults.
Rotor
Current signature analysis and rotor influence check while the motor runs. Detects broken rotor bars, cracked end rings, and rotor eccentricity.
Air Gap
Static and dynamic eccentricity analysis. Reveals bearing wear, shaft deflection, soft foot, and mechanical alignment issues affecting air gap uniformity.

Products & Industries
The Equipment Behind This Service
Every product we use for motor testing is one we sell, support, and know inside out. These are the same tools our engineers bring on-site.
Motor Testing Equipment
The MCE MAX portable motor tester—the tool that makes this service possible. Tests all 6 fault zones: power quality, power circuit, insulation, stator, rotor, and air gap. Works offline and online without removing the motor from service.
- All 6 fault zones in one instrument
- Offline + online testing capability
- Portable, battery-powered, no motor removal
Industrial Monitoring Sensors
Permanent vibration sensors that monitor between test intervals. Catches rapid-onset mechanical faults that develop between scheduled PdMA surveys.
Portable Vibration Analyzers
Route-based vibration data collection that supplements electrical testing with mechanical condition data. The full picture of motor health.
Where This Service Matters Most
Industry Applications
Oil & Gas
Pump and compressor motors in remote locations where a single motor failure shuts down an entire pipeline. PdMA testing catches insulation breakdown months before flashover—enough lead time to plan the repair around production.
Water & Wastewater
Pump stations that run 24/7 with no standby capacity. Testing during planned outages prevents catastrophic mid-cycle failures that would mean raw sewage overflows or supply interruptions.
Manufacturing
Production line motors that can’t stop without halting output. Online testing means zero production interruption—we diagnose faults while your line keeps running, so repairs happen on your schedule.
Power Generation
Critical cooling pumps and boiler feed motors where a single failure means unit derating or forced shutdown. Regular testing protects generation capacity and avoids penalty costs.
Mining & Cement
Large motors in dusty, high-vibration environments where extreme conditions accelerate insulation degradation. Baseline and trend testing tracks deterioration so you replace windings before they fail in service.
HVAC & Building
Chiller and AHU motors in commercial buildings where failure means tenant complaints, emergency callouts, and comfort loss. Scheduled testing during low-occupancy periods keeps systems reliable year-round.
FAQ
Common Questions
How long does motor testing take?
Most motors tested in under 30 minutes each. A typical plant survey of 20–50 motors completes in 1–2 days.
Do you need to shut down our motors?
Not necessarily. Online testing analyzes running motors. Offline testing requires a brief de-energization—we schedule around your maintenance windows.
What size motors can you test?
Any size—from fractional HP to large MV motors. PdMA equipment covers AC induction, synchronous, wound rotor, and DC motors.
What do I get in the report?
A prioritized action plan: which motors need immediate attention, which can wait, and which are healthy. Each motor's 6 fault zones scored individually.
How often should motors be tested?
Annually for most critical motors. Quarterly for high-value or problematic assets. We trend results over time to track degradation.
